Uhm if you did it under the counter, you could do that. I know a guy who has a LOT of guns from that method. However, I wouldn't recommend it. First of all you would have to find someone with the gun, then make sure they are willing to sell, then have enough money (full auto = +++$). Then, once you've bought it, you will have to find somewhere to shoot it. A range won't work because they will check to see if you are legal. In short, I wouldn't exactly recommend it. You might be better off going to Knob Creek, lol.

I owned a brand new one and recently sold it for $650. It didnt have the long barrel though.

It's a FUN gun to shoot. But accuaracy SUCKS. Hitting bowling pins at 50 yards was a challange. You'll run through 9mm though. Mine had a 33 round clip and you could unload that in a few seconds. Plus it's a gun you can bumfire with.

As far as auto goes, there are websites you can go to that show you how to modify it simply and have it fire "auto". That is highly ilegal though.

So if you prefer to stay out of prison, buy (a legal) one for fun.

Popular with inner city "gang bangers" during the early 1990's, this weapon fell under the 1994 ban, and as such the manufacturer first tried to continue selling them under another name (nice try), then went out of business since they had nothing else to offer. As such, they are now something of a collectible (with those who collect such things), despite the abysmal accuracy (however, keep in mind that FBI stats over the last 50 years show that most engagements involving handguns occur at an average of 7 yards). For any serious or professional shooter this gun was of little value - it was too big and heavy to be carried comfortably, it was too unreliable when firing anything but FMJ ammunition, and the accuracy with very crude fixed sights was marginal. Quite fun to shoot though, and will straight eat through a case of 9mm in a hurry. With today's prices, that's no longer quite the bonus it once was.

its funny how yall say its false and my dad has bought two ak47's at gun shows and they ran a FBI check but never asked if he even had a class 3, he has a class 2, later we got FBI checks on the serial #'s and talked to the agent and he said that gun shows in ga dont require class 3

Semiauto's don't require a class 3, you just have to be 18, fill out the relevant paperwork, and pass your background check. 99.99% of all AK's in the US fall into this category, as they are not legal to import in any other condition.
Full autos (select fire), often referred to outright by the feds as "machine guns", are covered by the NFA, require you be 21, be fingerprinted, possess a special BATF license, obtain a signature from the county sheriff or city or town chief of police (not necessarily permission), pay a yearly tax on each such weapon, and are often outright illegal in some states/municipalities/jurisdictions. You need to find a class III dealer; make sure that this is a place that handles class III and NFA transfers. Just because a place has an FFL does not mean that it handles class III and NFA transfers. They're also often outrageously expensive (x20 cost), as they're quite rare, and in many case have been illegal to make or import for decades (i.e. Thompson SMG's, etc).
Examples of converted class 3 / select fire AKs -
    http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=133519140
    http://www.gunsamerica.com/933197467/Guns/Rifles/Class-3-Rifles/Class-3-Subguns/Fleming_Firearms_AKS_Full_Auto_AK.htm
Note that these retail for $15,000-$16,000, making it highly unlikely that you will ever see one for sale at a Gun Show (where business is strictly cash and carry). Very Happy

An under the counter purchase (basically, a sale that doesn't abide by the law), as alluded to by Spectre and others, is indeed highly illegal, expect a litany of federal charges and time served.
