im looking to buy an Elite Force M4A1 and use that as my base gun (which will be a gun thats relatively cheap and non-china made). would this be a good idea or are there better options?

Elite force is Ares which is made in Hong Kong which is part of China. But they are decent guns. What about the KWA Mod2 or the G&G guns?

Ares is china made? hmm.. interesting. i have had some experience with G&G and im not too fond of what they have to offer seeing as mine is broken/is breaking. i would love to have the KWA guns too but sadly they are out of my current budget, even with the release of the CQR series. But back on with the G&G, could the issues i had be severly just my luck or manufacturer?

EDIT: What about an ICS M4 Sportline model?
I want the base gun to be as "barebones" as possible so i can have some real fun with its customization

if you want to know about ICS guns or even get better advice on any guns head over to Command Airsoft Technologies in Ball Ground, GA. they guys who run the shop are very professional and are very helpful. they are an international distributor of ICS guns and they specialize in custom work. definitely a great place

ICS is good. We also sell ICS. Your Problem with G&G is probably simple. We use G&G's as rentals and they have lasted years and they get abused all the time.

my guess is that i just have personal beef with G&G. i found a Classic Army full metal sportline LWRC M6 Carbine for around $199. is classic army a decent company to use for a base gun? i know that CA is really good and has potential (as do all guns as far as upgrading goes) but how are Classic Army's as far as out-of-the-box specs?

    Classic Army = Crossman

Crossman bought Classic Army and you can buy them at Walmart. Classic Army isn't worth a darn and for 10.00 less you can buy the KWA MOD2. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON Classic Army

Sweet a member in my neck of the woods hehe. But seriously. Head to Airdog, speak with Rhino and he will treat you right. Then you can hook up with me and some of my buddies and we will help you down the right path.
