Day In The Life Climbing More Mountains

The post here is surrounded by mountains. So sometimes we wonder how it would feel to be up those mountains and I tell you they're steep. Not gonna lie the terrain somewhat reminded me of mountains back in Georgia. I just woke up one day and packed my ruck with 35-40 lbs and decided to have a go. You can bet that I won't be doing this again in a while. The view was worth it though at the top. Boredom is taking it's toll.

My Platoon was responible for one of the hills in the Casey/Hovey Cut. It overlooked the Helipad. It seemed like every month we would get the "HEY!!! IT'S 0230!!!! THE NKA ARE ATTACKING!!!! GET YOUR SHIT AND LET'S GET UP THAT YAMMA!!!!" Full combat gear including Dragons (anti armor missle that is man portable). We also had to take up all the commo wire and phones for land line commo and NBC detection crap. Then sit there.....all friggin day.....then climb down.

Seriously though, do all the extra pt you can. Have you done the school house run? Take the road on Casey that goes to the rifle range. Just past the 503rd barracks there is a gate on the right with a guard shack. That is the road. Beautiful run.

They call that school house run "The stairway to heaven" now. I despise our run days because it's 90% uphill. That's all I do now on my free time is PT, PT, and even more PT. There's nothing to do here but avoid juicy girls and do more PT.

Our alerts go different since we're artillery. It's more like, get your gear and stuff you want to bring, load up the Paladins, drive here, lay the guns, and wait for fire missions. We don't do any of that climbing mountain in full gear crap unless our 1SG drank his coffee that morning and decides to be all hooah hooah and realize halfway through the climb that he is too old for that crap and tells us to turn around and go down. The winter here is not looking good, it's starting to freeze and we're still wearing summer PTs for the morning.

Your kid's a 11B right? Thick winter socks, good boots. The Army issues him the rest, although you're still in the world of suck because this country loves to have some freezing rain.

For rain/snow, SEALSKINZ boot liner/oversock. I also had some ROCKY waterproof socks. These go over your regular socks and keep the toes warm and dry.....as long as water doesn't get over the top, or soak your pants so bad that the water is running down your leg into your socks. This sucks. There is another water proof sock out there if I remember correctly, but this one was super tight around the top and I wondered if it would hamper circulation.

For socks, thicker is not always better. Moisture wicking is good. Merino wool is good. Some brands that I use are SMART WOOL, OMNI WOOL, and.....one other that I can't remember. I think Dick's has all 3 of them. A little more pricey then regular sport socks, but some things you really need to spend money on.

I used the thick Smart Wool and oh man they are expensive. It's like $20 a pair but they saved my feet from a couple of long range ruck marches.

Cold and wet winter I hated that. Was at Casey Dec 93 to Dec 94. Good socks is the best thing.

Unless they are issueing great socks these day , you are denying your feet a little slice of heaven. Good socks will get you a bit farther. Great socks will make your feet yell at you "Why are we stopping!!! I FEEL GREAT!!!"
