As long as you have hopup it does apply on weapons around i think 400fps or more, because at that velocity a light bb will be extremely affected by air resistance and will cause it to fall faster, but the heavier bb will cut through the wind giving it more range and accuracy. In my old TM Vsr-10 G-Spec, which chronoed at 630, when you throw .2g bb's in there it only goes barely 150ft, but with SGM .29g bb's it could reach out to 300ft, so that proves it right there. When you chrono you are supposed to do it with .2g bb's, because it is not the velocity that matters but the amount of force it causes the bb to hit you at. Even thought it was going say 420 with .2g and 380 with .25g, it will still hurt the same at close ranges even with the fps difference and will actually hurt more at farther ranges because heavier bb's keep their velocity longer at longer distances, thus having more force.
