So Candice and I are moving soon and I'm looking into different guard dogs. I have always been a Doberman guy and have had them ever since I was born, but I am thinking about mixing it up. What suggestions do you guys have? I need it to be good with kids to so no Caucasian Mountain Dog or some other monstrosity.

Re: Guard Dog Choices
Dude, just about any dog will work as a watch dog except maybe a basset hound or ankle biter. I have two Boston terriers and people are scared to death of them. Also they are very smart and good with kids.NJSC wrote:So Candice and I are moving soon and I'm looking into different guard dogs. I can't stand boston terriers. No offense, but I just don't like them. Anyone had experience with Cane Corsos?

Or a Labrador. My lab has the scariest bark. Alot of mail guys are scared crapless to come to the door. aThey are very sweet dogs. Most wouldnt actually attack anoyone. Which may be a good or bad thing for you.

Well don't get a Shih Tzu. All mine does is sleep and eat, haha. Well what do you expect from a dog, who's origins are from being a Emperial Footwarmer.

Great dogs, but as puppies they're devils. Are you going to be training this dog as a gaurd/attack dog? If not, I'd suggest a Rotwieler. Lots of people think that they're born viscious, but they're really calm, awesome with kids, and all-around good dogs. It's only when they're trained as gaurd/attack dogs that they can be aggressive.WPeake23 [SOTHG] wrote:Or a Labrador. My lab has the scariest bark. Re: Guard Dog Choices
Actually I would recommend a Boxer they are territorial so they make great watch dogs but at the same time they are very playful like a Labrador.
and + 2 Rottweilers are great dogs...when they are untrained.

Re: Guard Dog Choices
I would stick with Dobes. They are the 5th smartest dog in the world and very loyal to family. My parents and I raised Dobermans for home and security protection roles.
I have yet to see another Guard dog top a Dobe.German sheperds are good but heat plays a big role on how much work they can do.They are a long hair dog and really need cool climates.Rotts are great but very big and bulky and require alot of food and they chew way to much as puppies.Dobes on the other hand are very sleek slim and short hair and they require very little maint. They are strong and very fast and very easy to train for multi roles. They can also be trained to respond to voice or hand commands. If you don't go for another Dobe go for a Dachshund short hair. They are pack dogs and great with families and very alert to strangers.

Re: Guard Dog Choices
Yeah I will probably stick with Dobes. I love those dogs. The one that I have that lives at my mom's place is 120lbs, and would tear someone up if need be. Plus I know the breeder where we got him from and the bloodlines are filled with bigger dobes.
