one of my friends gave me a jg m4 s-systemtoday that was kinda broken for a gas pistol that was kinda broken. the pistol wouldnt always shoot and the m4 only shoots on full auto. when i pull the trigger in semi mode the trigger just goes back and then stays there and no bullets come out. on full auto it shoots fine. does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening? (if so then how do i fix it?)

likely selector plate related . . . the spring is not pushing the yaw to engage the back of the sector gear and limit single shot.

cant tell you whats wrong with the pistol unless i look at it myself, What model is it?

The best thing i can advise you to do (dont do if you dont know how to work with mechboxes):

    - Take out the trigger harness and clean contacts
    - Make sure the Contact above harness is sliding properly and the trigger is pushing it accordingly (white part)

    - See for any sign of wear on the cut off lever
    - what tinman stated
    - Check the tip of the trigger and make sure the spring is on properly

Yea, this is definitely a issue with your cut off lever. The spring that keeps it down on semi is missing or out of place.
