So I was sitting at a Christmas party last night and I got to play with a very nice Canon camera. He told me that buying a decent camera would be a good idea for me to take pictures of my family.
So with that being said I know some of you guys on here are into photography. Where do I start? What are the things to look for in a camera? etc. I want great quality photos of the family and in the future look at doing some other stuff.

    I would go with a Sony Cyber-shot

    http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cybershot-DSC-W100-Digital-Optical/dp/B000ENRFNS

thats a good one, i have one and it is pretty good quality
    3.0x zoom
    8.1 mega pixels
very efficient for taking pictures of the family
for video, the sound quality sucks on this one tho

    Nikon D3000.

Great camera to start with. Real easy to get used to. It takes about a good hour or two to get used to it. It's Nikon so it's internals are gold. Plus it's a great platform to advance in if you want to take photography seriously since Nikon bodies are golden, just buy a better lense.

Price range, I've seen about $499-$599 depends on where you look.

Look on eBay, you can find some killer deals on a lot of really nice cameras.

Do you want a point and shoot or a DSLR?

what's your budget? lenses will cost more than the camera.
i have a nikon D60 and works great, but i would recommend one that also does video.

i'm not a fan of the small point and shoot pop out lenses. my kids have gone through at least 20 of them, including sony cybershots.

I think I want to stay south of 500 for right now. I'm not looking at point and shoot something more DSLR. I definitely want to be able to get better lenses in the future. But I don't know what sort of qualities to be looking for. I like flipas idea. Looks to be the right sort of track.

It's the same camera I would've gotten. But my friend offered a steal on a Nikon D50, older than the D3000 but the lenses that came with it is just too great to pass up.

This is my first time personally owning a Nikon, and I'm already a fanboy.
