gas block question

how does one put a replica gas block onto M4 outer barrel?
does the barrel need to be made a specific way? or can you just put any gas block onto any barrel?

A standard gas block has pins near the bottom of it that will attach it to a outer barrel

some barrels have notches on them like this one

It does NEED to, thats the style barrel me and trent run in our magpul m4's without gasblocks
