Its about time for me to get a gun and i've been thinking about this for a while. Ive narrowed it down to a rifle since I cant buy handguns and shotguns dont really fit my needs. I've shot many guns before but I never owned one. Ive been thinking of getting a WW2 era bolt action rifle like a mosin nagant or enfield, but I also like the feel of "tactical" weapons like the AR-15. I have a budget of around $700-800 So has anyone got advice?

Re: Looking for a gun to buy
You can get some Rock Rivers and Bushmasters for your your price range. Those are about the only two of the lower/ Mid range AR 's that I like. Otherwise your going to have to wait and save up a little more to get a decent AR. Or you can try going to a gunsmith and seeing what they can do to make one that you like? That can usually be cheaper than buying an AR and then putting a bunch of aftermarket parts on it.

Well you aren't going to want a bolt action for a "home defense if necessary" gun. It's just not the right tool for the job. If you are looking for something fun that may be more practical for home defense an AR, mini 14, or similar gun will be best. You have to understand that over penetration even with the .223 will be a concern. Home defense I would definitely steer you toward a 12 ga. But that isn't as fun to shoot haha. You could also go with a hand gun which is fun to shoot and quite suited for home defense.

You have to be 21, so he cant get a handgun. Besides, handguns are lame (Prepping myself for the flurry of ZOMG PISTOLS RULE COMMENTS).

Yeah my primary use will be on the range, and i know that bolt action will make a less effective home defense weapon, but a lot of people reccomend a bolt action for a first time rifle and you can easily get one for around $100 or less. Then again ive always really wanted to own an AR or similar type weapon for multiple purposes. Im not really a shotgun person and I am unable to purchase handguns
what other types of rifles are similar to that of an AR at that price range? ive looked a bit into mini 14s

Re: Looking for a gun to buy
You could try a .22 AR. or a .22 MP5. .22 MP5s are so dang cool, I want to get one. And those are all very cheap, about 300-500 bucks. Or you could try for an AK....but I personally hate ak's.

Ruger does make some good 22s. I have one and so does my brother, and it has never let me down. Please please please do not buy anything UTG or Tapco though, they do not make field worthy products in my opinion.

agreed for the most part. You need to modify their stuff before it fits your weapon right. Also if you do get a ruger make shure it has an extended magazine release

.22 ballistics are just not good. .17 HMR and now you are looking at a fun rifle.

If your looking for a cheap WW2 area bolt action rifle. Theres no reason not to get a mosin nagant. 100 max, or if you want to get a smaller version, you can get the m44 version. I personnaly own one and love it.

Re: Looking for a gun to buy
for now i might stick to a mosin or enfield, or GSG-522 (.22 MP5), and save the rest of my money for a higher end AR in the future

.22 MP5 FTW KEVIN. Srsly, they are pretty legit little guns. No recoil at all, and they are pretty dang accurate.

Re: Looking for a gun to buy
Owning all 4 ww2 bolt guns I can say go with a enfield. Simply because ammo is readily available. .303 British is available everywhere. The 8mm and 7.62x54 isn't always. Plus the majority of it is corrosive primed and requires extensive cleaning after a few shots. Another good choice would be an SKS. I Paid right at 200 for my norinco and haven't looked back. You could also look at the different variants such as the yugo or the Russian. All are fine rifles, they just have there own distinctions.

Rifles
I've an AR and a coupla Ruger 10/22s. I love my AR, it's my pride n joy, but I actually spend much more time behind the Rugers, cheaper to shoot, easily customized, and I can shoot them almost any where, fwiw.

Re: Looking for a gun to buy
from experience working with many diffrent types of weapons at blackwater usa these are my personal recommendations
home defense: pistol just about any 9mm glock good reliable accurate but still has a punch rifle: short m4/ar-15
might want to consider a supressor on any weapon you use indors
fun: m4/ar-15 are fun kar-98k loud or a 9mm ar-15 is always fun and cheap
if your budget increases to around $12000-$15000 ill sell you a cheytac m200 with 200 rds of .408 HEIAP

Re: Looking for a gun to buy
I was looking at the P90 (civy version), how much does the ammo cost and avaibility of them compare to other rounds?
