Yesterday I picked up the BT Paintball Design Bulletproof Chest Protector at Dicks for $39.99.

I purchased this mainly to protect my back from friendly fire and those kill shots you get from in front of you and from behind you as you walk to the re-spawn site with hands and weapon in the air above your head shouting DEAD MAN!
This is a shirt made for sweaty sports, with padding in the front, back and shoulders. It is intended to protect paintball or airsoft players from the pain of the game. It works well for that purpose. I just shot myself in the chest and belly, at point- blank range, with .25gram 6mm BBs, at 388 FPS. Barely felt it! Probably would not have called my hit if it were in a CQB game figuring I was hit by a ricochet. I could be a little happier with this shirt but not my playmates so I will have to adjust my playing to be sure I call my hits. I presume it would work well for a paintball at 285 FPS too
When I started writing it I was going to tell why I was returning it. Halfway through as, I wore the armor in different ways, tested its function and wore all my other gear with it I changed my opinion. By the time I finished writing the review while wearing it I was falling in love.
I am on the short side with a barrel chest (5’7” high, 179#, with a 45” chest) and this *one size fits all* shirt was swimming on me. Because of its XL size, I mistakenly put it on over a tee shirt and a thermal long sleeve I was wearing on this below freezing winter day. I then put my BDU shirt on, on top of that. When I sat down, it pushed up and felt made me feel like I was sitting inside of a turtle shell.
Wearing the shirt against the skin definitely reduces the turtle shell feeling. With the protector against the skin and the BDU long sleeve button up over it, it is much more comfortable. Like a soft shell turtle. I presume in the summer this would feel nice not to have a hot sweaty undershirt stuck to you but have a little space for some cool air. The padding in the back is just the right length not to get in the way of your pants waist, while the padding in the front appears to have been designed for when you are running crouched, just touching your pant waist while in that position.
There is no protection on the sides, where your arms hang down or right under the neck. I can’t see why they omitted protection on the sides. Perhaps for cooling purposes? I can see why they omitted padding right below the neck. One; because if there were padding under the neck it would be sticking me in the throat every time I lean forward and two; perhaps they are players and know we don’t need more stuff under our chin pushing the mask up off our face every time we look down to check our zipper. The seams between the padded panels are not protected either. Raising my arms above my head causes the shoulders to stick me in the neck, but not in any way uncomfortably. It feels pretty comfortable with only a thermal shirt over it and with the thermal shirt and BDU top. I suppose on a hot summer day it would suffice to just wear this shirt when playing outdoors. It tucks in nicely and seems to stay put rather well.
I can’t wait to wear it in battle. I suppose I will never know how much I really appreciate this product will not because I will not be able to tell when it is working. Gotta get used to it and call those hits.
Shoot you later.
