You can use any battery that is compatible with the plugs. A Echo 1 can take a 9.6v. battery with new set of steel bushings and a exceptional shim job.

An echo1 will do fine on a 9.6v battery without shimming it, I have many friends that have 9.6v in theirs and no problems yet.

Is it a fullstock or a folding stock? If it's a folding stock, you'll need to modify the battery compartment to fit a 9.6v stick battery.

If the wiring is already to the stock, the you should have no problems finding a 9.6v that will fit in your stock.
