Dad's work testing

My dad is a Forensic Engineer, working for his business Peake Engineering. A few months ago he got a call, from an older lady saying she had some hearing loss because of what her neighbor had done. Here's how the story goes:

Here the old lady is in her RV. Her neighbor for whatever reason, decides to shoot the RV with his Remington 30-06. Supposedly the bullet went a few feet above her head and the shock wave gave her hearing loss, or at least that is the story she tells. The neighbor does say he shot the RV. The question is, would that actually give her hearing loss?

So sometime in the near future, my dad is going to shoot an RV with a Remington 30-06, and test the sound out put on the other side. (Under controlled circumstances, of course)
I'm sure that will be fun.

But I posted this to see what your guys opinion is on this. and also I thought it was an interesting story anyway.

As for my opinion on the matter, I believe that her story is inaccurate. The loudest sound from a rifle is the shot initially breaking the sound barrier, which should occur at the location of the rifle. There should not be a significant enough displacement of air after that to cause the sort of trauma to the ear that the woman is claiming. I could be wrong, as I am not a physicist, but, a 30-06 bullet does not have the mass to cause that sort of displacement. I simply do not see how it would cause that kind of damage, without her being right next to the muzzle of said rifle.

That being said, what was her neighbor doing shooting at her RV, let alone while she was in it?

I thought the exact same thing.

I absolutely suck at physics but my question is why was she shooting her car?

Yea, I will defiantly tell you guys what happened after it all goes down.

She is an old lady and perhaps her hearing was already on the fringe of collapse. Alot of old people tend to have hearing that is already shot, but some also have the opposite, hearing that is very insensitive and worn-out but prone to complete collapse. Maybe the simple noise of the bullet whining past her head was the final straw in her ears fragile state.

I think it more likely that her hearing was already gone and she just wanted to try to get some money of it.

The woman was sitting in her house minding her own business and he shot it? If that is the story, she should get to sue him. If your in the right states that is considered attempted manslaughter, and that guy would be going to jail. He could have killed her, he needs to spend some time in jail for being an idiot!

Agreed, however, I still do not think the bullet is what damaged her hearing. I was also wondering why the f*** he would be shooting at her trailer/rv, especially while she was in it.

He could have been hunting, 30-6 bullets travel quite a ways, he could have been pretty far away and not even known she was there

It's possible but that is not what the story seems to indicate. Regardless of what he was doing, he should have been aware of what was behind his intended target. There are also laws about how far away you have to be from places of residence in order to discharge a firearm so there are any number of laws that he was likely breaking.

Maybe it's as simple as he was trying to shoot her.

No he is set to do the shoot next Thursday I think.

Also I believe the 30.06 is a bullet that does travel at supersonic speeds. Try testing the microphone at different distances from where the bullet enters the trailer or metal. Likely the minature sonic boom was the final straw for her hearing.

But again why the h3ll would he shoot at her trailer!!
