While I do agree with you that is no where near the original car, I established this guideline in the original post. I think that there was definitely a car previous to the gti that launched the pocket car revolution.... the beetle.

So what is in a name? The Impreza is then excused. And we may choose to disagree on the GTi vs the Beetle in terms of a catalyst that sparked a revolution.

Ive owned quite a few Grand Nationals 86's and 87's no GNX's though. My last Grand National was a Mid 10 second car at mid 130's MPH. I also had a 94 GMC Sonoma with a Stage 2 4.1 buick Turbo V6 that made 950 HP.

Once of my fav's that I have never owned is a GMC Syclone AWD 4.1 Turbo charged liquid intercooled V6. Was the fastest production Truck also!
