Is it recommended to run an alarm with 11.1 or 7.4 lipos? Ive been reading up on my lipo safety and wondering if i need to aquire an alarm and what its purpose really is.

Re: Lipo question
depends how well disciplined you are. i know when my 9.6 or 8.4 batteries will start draining. i've gotten used to when my 7.4 lipo starts to hit 70% (i frequently check the percentage after each game session). now for my kid's AEG's, i'm going to put 7.4's on theirs and will also add a permanent buzzer. i have low voltage monitors and buzzers coming in the mail (and more 7.4v LiPo's). i would avoid 11.1v unless you are building extreme ROF or subsonic FPS.
btw, flippa mentioned his LiPo puffed up on him on sunday's game. i hope it didn't flame up.
the alarm buzzes when the battery drains down to a certain voltage. LiPo's don't like being drained or overcharged.
they also don't like being hit by a nail...

Re: Lipo question
WOW
Expensive form of hot burning smoke.
From what i have read if you over dicharge the lipo's they will go bad quickly. I really just want to keep them functioning and not catch on fire!
I ordered a 7.4 2300 mah 20c and 2 11.1 1300 mah 20c just for fun. would you recommend running alrams with these?
I'm thinking the 2300 should last more than an all day skirmish and really not sure about the 1300's. My thoughts are that if they will begin to run our of juice before i quit playing then i should probablly run an alarm on them??
Any idea how long thos batteries should last with the averag trigger finger?

I would say both should last all day. Hell, I can get two days out of my 1500mah easy. But I do not run full auto too much and only put about 2000 rounds MAX through it in an all day play match. If you are trying to run it as a SAW, then you might have an problem but in normal simi-auto and assault type functions, I would say you are ok!
With that said, peace of mind is a good thing and if an alarm gives you that then I would say go for it.

Re: Lipo question
Nothing is worse then getting out onto the field and wondering in the back of your head if everything is ok. Add that to the fear some people have of having a Lipo in your butt stock blow up just inches from your face... You should be thinking about the game and not all that crap. Peace of mind is priceless!!!

Re: Lipo question
Hey guys, I run an RC track and I fool with Lipos from 2 cell to 6 cell everyday allday for the last 3 yrs. Heck I got numerous lipo carcases laying all around.
Most every lipo fire happens on charging, not discharge. I have seen very few fires during discharge. When people have a damaged (puntured) cell, and have it on a charger it can burn.
Ive never seen one explode, but the fire is very hot and difficult to put out.
In my experience, draining the lipo all the way out will never cause a fire. Many RC planes stuck in trees for months testify. You will just lose the battery from overdraining.
You dont want to go below 3 volts per cell. Some guys set lipo cut-offs to 3.2 or so.
When a battery is damaged, alot of times it will puff. Puffing does not mean the batter is finished (ived used puffers for months before). But Its best to be safe and trash a puffed battery.
The best thing to do is get a decent smartcharger that will recognize a damaged pack and wont charge it.
only one time I saw a battery burn not connected to anything.
Also in my limited experience with lipo in my gun, I run it till the first time it wont pull back the piston. Havent went under yet.
But if its cheap, go for the alarms.

Re: Lipo question
Do that to a Nimh and it will catch fire too! I hate when people show videos like that saying lipos are dangerous! ALL batteries will catch fire!!!!!!!!!!!!
