As far as the President talking to students:

When the Federal Government created the Department of Education, the states thought it was a good idea because now they could get their hands on Federal dollars to use for State education. One problem though. Federal dollars always come with strings. Now States have to comply with Federal standards to get the money. Oops. The Department Of Education is part of the executive branch, and thus falls directly under the leadership of the President. Therefore no one has the right to complain about the President speaking to students, because he is, by chain of command, the head Principal. So everyone can whine if they want, but this is one of the consequences of giving control of education to the federal government.

Come on now. It's not bad enough that they needed to skip school. IMO A good American needs to be able to at least watch our president talk about something non political, without being like that about it.

Alright, some rules for this thread.
    #1. NO FLAMING. Be polite.
#2. Don't beat a dead horse. Make your point, and if the conversation isn't going anywhere, then feel free to propose a new topic.
#3. Know what you're talking about. Please don't go listen to a fringe talk show and assume that what is said there is fact. If you're looking for some unbiased sources, NPR, CSPAN( yeah, I know, it's dry) and PBS's The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer are good places to start, as they're both pretty moderate. FactCheck.org is also a pretty good resource.

We'll start off with some general, broad questions, and then we'll move on to the more specific stuff.
And on to the next topic...

Is it better when the White House and Congress are controlled by the same party, or when one party controls both?

No. The most american thing you can do is speak your mind about politics freely, be it contrary to the President's ideas or not. An UnAmerican ideal would be to blindly follow your leaders. As for the statement of him being the smartest president by far, that cant be proven, let alone argued soundly. Hes been in office for less than a year.

jjay, there is such thing as periods.

    back on topic now.

I think Bush took the fall for what Clinton set up.

How can a nation expect an economy to succeed at a time of war?? Has it ever in the past? If Obama would have been in Bush's shoes at that particular time, the economy would have plunged just as it did. One man didnt put American into trillions of dollars of debt.

Also, if you have researched many of Obama's policies, you should know that he has done his great share of "useless" spending.

Last point to be made, or suggested. . . . . You mentioned a "government official" said the end of the recession is near on the news. It sure is nice to know the media is reliable. woah, what a relief. Wink

also +1 on what Paul (aggressor) said. Being American means we have the rights this nation has too offer. The very first amendment is Freedom of speech. Therefore by exercising this freedom, we are not only being American, but also showing the benefits of our country. Were people "unamerican" when they bashed Bush? No, they were probably considered "cool" or "normal". Just because one persons opinion varies from anothers, doesnt mean their "unamerican", or anything along those lines.

jjay, you keep telling us that voicing our opinions on Obama is "UnAmerican" but you in turn rag on Bush, saying that it is all his fault. What has Obama done any better? He has very nearly spent more in 8 months than Bush did in 8 years. Obama hasn't had a real test yet either, Bush has to deal with 9/11, dont be so quick to judge him. In 20 years we will be able to look back with a broader understanding, but no one knows all the facts yet.

With war comes spending! I sure am glad Obama wasnt in office when 9/11 happened. I could see it now.

When I'm getting shot at in Afghanistan by enemies of this nation, yes, that is where I will be deployed once I commission, you can call me UnAmerican. I dare you.

I will judge the actions the president makes, as it is my DUTY as an AMERICAN to make sure that my vote is going towards what I voted for. So far everything you ahve said about Obama is based off of OPINION (he is smarter than Bush, he is the greatest leader, he is getting the economy back on track, etc etc), yet you treat everyone else in here like they are fact, and our disputing the fact is met with our labeling as UnAmerican. Bite your tongue before you say that, the people here are very patriotic and I can assure you want nothing but the best for this nation.

I agree on one point you make but Obama spent the same amount of money in his three days of office that Bush spent in all or his 8 years. Now for Bush, I approved of most of his decisions... up until he had the border problems. I believe as a country we moved more towards bigger government when he had started cracking down on the borders. Now was it bad? I cant say it was really bad or good. It depends on the way you see the issue. I just believe we stepped more in the direction of More government. Its times like these that I wish Reagan was still president.
